2018 Employee of the Year is Tim Stephens

Tim Stephens, the Springfield School District’s lead inventory specialist who has worked for the district for 18 years, has been selected by OSEA as its 2018 Employee of the Year.

The announcement was made May 14 by OSEA President Tim Stoelb before the start of a school board meeting at the Springfield School District Administrative Offices. Click here for photos from the the announcement.

Stephen’s supervisor, Greg James describes Stephens as a “doer” who never says something cannot be done, but rather “this is how we make this happen.”

“In my many years in public education — not only within my own district, but working with other districts across the state — I have rarely encountered an employee who more exemplifies service-based leadership than this candidate,” James wrote in a letter nominating Stephens.

James also noted that Stephens has earned the trust of everyone — from the superintendent to principals, teachers and fellow classified — because he consistently exceeds expectations.

As Springfield Chapter 4 president, Stephens has increased membership in the last two years from the high 50 percent range to approximately 87 percent. He also has personally visited each site and helped explain the benefits of membership to employees.

Springfield Chapter Secretary Kim Donaghe wrote in her nomination letter, “Tim knows most of our 720-plus classified by name. He has developed a bond with all classified staff in a way no past president has.”

OSEA’s Employee of the Year is one of the highest honors the union bestows on members. Stephens will be honored throughout OSEA’s annual three-day Conference, held June 28-30 in Portland. He will be presented with a traveling trophy and a plaque during the Saturday night awards banquet on June 30.
