We need your help

The Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Oregon OSHA) is still accepting public comments regarding a proposed rule change regarding the reporting of workplace violence in our K-12 schools.

Currently, K-12 schools are exempt from the stringent recordkeeping regulations other occupations are required to follow. In industries such as construction, employers must routinely document all injuries and work-related illnesses under Oregon OSHA rules. But in a school environment, employers are only required to report fatalities, amputations, inpatient hospitalizations and loss of an eye.

In January, OSEA petitioned Oregon OSHA to make a rule removing the K-12 exemption and require school districts to submit workplace injury reports to Oregon OSHA.  Adoption of this rule will result in gaining important data on the frequency and types of workplace injuries sustained by our members. This data will help in developing ways to prevent and reduce injuries.

OSEA has shared our members’ stories of being assaulted and injured by the students they serve with Oregon OSHA and Oregon legislators. Your stories have moved decision-makers to address the issue, and now your stories, experiences and/or hearing attendance are needed to demonstrate to Oregon OSHA why this rule change is needed.
