OSEA Secretary Hofer named AACSE president

OSEA state Secretary Mary Hofer was appointed president of the American Association of Classified School Employees (AACSE) by the organization’s board of directors at its annual spring meeting on Feb. 26.

Hofer, who had been serving as one of two elected AACSE directors from OSEA, will serve as AACSE president for the next two years. Hofer said she sees her appointment as just another step in a natural progression of leadership. Hofer said she believes her experience, first as the vice president in her local OSEA chapter and more recently as secretary on OSEA’s Board of Directors, has prepared her for this new challenge.

Bend-La Pine Chapter 6’s Mary Hofer participates in OSEA’s Member Organizing Summer Institute (MOSI) in 2015, one of many activities that led to ever greater union involvement which has culminated in her recent appointment as president of the American Association of Classified School Employees (AACSE).

“It’s an opportunity for me to be a voice for classified employees; to bring our local and state issues to the national level,” she said.

“Mary brings strong advocacy skills to the leadership of AACSE,” OSEA President Tim Stoelb said. “OSEA is proud to have her leading the way for classified personnel at the national level.”

OSEA is a founding member of AACSE, a national organization representing about 250,000 classified school employees in 48 states.

Per OSEA Board Policy, the AACSE director vacancy created by Hofer’s promotion was filled by one of OSEA’s two AACSE alternate directors, Sarah Wofford. This leaves Wofford’s alternate director position vacant.Board Policy directs such a vacancy to be filled via a special election, but the Board chose to waive this requirement and have delegates at Conference elect a successor to finish out the remaining year of Wofford’s term.

Conference delegates will then have three AACSE positions to elect in June: director (currently held by Monica McCanna) and two alternate directors (one currently held by Sella Bemrose and the other formerly held by Wofford).

Members considering running for the vacant alternate director position can download a nomination form on the OSEA website. Nominations may still be made by delegates from the Conference floor prior to elections on Saturday, June 29.
