Course teaches ladder safety to members

Twenty-two custodians and maintenance personnel attended a recent ladder and safety training in Sherwood.

Falls from ladders are a leading cause of occupational injury and death. They are also preventable. Choosing the right ladder for the job can make all the difference, said Connie DeYoe, education and training specialist for OSEA.

Richard Ohannessian, a custodian in Sherwood Chapter 103, descends a ladder at a training event in his district.

And with new fall protection rules going into effect next year, now is a great time to review the new rules and dust off those tried-and-true safety tips:

  • Before use, inspect the ladder to ensure frame and steps/rungs are in good shape.
  • Use the ladder as it was intended to be used: In particular, pay attention to the weight load capacity printed on the ladder frame.
  • Have a spotter or second pair of eyes on hand whenever possible.
  • Don’t use metal ladders near overhead power lines.
  • When climbing the ladder with materials, hold the load close to your body.
