Beaverton, Woodburn to host First Book events
Thanks to the combined efforts of OSEA members in Beaverton and Woodburn, more than 40,000 new books will find their way into the hands of low-income children next month.
Together, Beaverton Chapter 48 and Woodburn Chapter 25 signed up enough people to qualify for a truckload of books from First Book, a national nonprofit that distributes free new books to children in need. The chapters will be giving out the books at separate distribution events on Saturday, June 4.
At the Beaverton event, First Book registrants will be able to pick up to 30 books to take back to their low-income schools, classrooms and educational programs. Meanwhile, Woodburn will allow First Book registrants to pick up to 40 books. Both events will also accept registrations on site.
School employees, volunteers, parents or those working with low-income kids — in a Title I eligible school or at least 70 percent low-income — can register with First Book. People may also register on behalf of a program serving low-income families and children if all the books are going to that program.
But before the books can be distributed, the chapters will need help sorting the books on Friday, June 3. Even with each chapter taking half the truckload, it will be a logistical challenge requiring lots of volunteers to get 20,000 books in place.
Members interested in helping out at the Beaverton sorting and distribution events can sign up to volunteer online. Those who want to volunteer for the Woodburn sorting and distribution events should contact chapter Co-Vice President Stacy Yelton at 503-989-5529 or sygoofy1@gmail.com.
