School employees are some of the most vital and accessible staff supporting children while also carrying a significant responsibility for maintaining safe and healthy educational and care environments for everyone involved. Given the level of trauma in many of our lives, and in the lives and circumstances of the children and families we work with, having understanding, tools and support is vital, especially now.
This very interactive workshop will cover the prevalence and impact of trauma on individuals, organizations and communities and how to recognize and address the needs of impacted children, youth and caregivers, with special attention to the intersection of trauma and schools. It will include information about and strategies to support emotional regulation for students and staff. We will also cover information and strategies for preventing and managing vicarious trauma and promoting workplace safety and wellness.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the prevalence and impact of violence, abuse and other forms of trauma on the students (and colleagues) we work with
- Explain the intersection of trauma, stress, toxic stress and potential of schools and educational settings for addressing or exacerbating the impacts
- Discuss key findings of the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study, and how these findings are being used to guide improvements in our work
- Identify key brain structures and processes involved in stress and trauma reactions, and describe behavioral presentations associated with these processes
- Identify and apply practical strategies for supporting emotional regulation and maintaining calm and safe environments
