Nicolle Landau of Lake Oswego Chapter 12 is OSEA’s 2020 Employee of the Year!
Nicolle Landau of Lake Oswego Chapter 12 has been named OSEA’s 2020 Employee of the Year. She received this award after being nominated by her chapter and selected by OSEA’s past presidents.
“OSEA’s Employee of the Year Award honors one outstanding member who goes above and beyond for their students, school and OSEA chapter. I can think of no one more deserving of this award than Nicolle Landau,” said President Lisa Gourley. “Nicolle has been one of our most dedicated members for many years. She has served our union in many capacities and always does whatever is needed to support our members. We are so lucky to have her as part of our OSEA community!”
Landau has been a leader, community builder and source of support for her fellow members. During her 25 years as an OSEA member, she has served as chapter vice president, worksite organizer, local government relations committee chair, OSEA delegate to the Northwest Oregon Labor Council (NOLC) and a member of just about every committee possible. At the state level, she has served on the public relations, advisory and finance committees, and has been Conference Committee co-chair for the last two years.
Landau’s skills as a relationship builder are deeply valued by her fellow members. “District employees know she is trustworthy, smart, has her ear to the ground and their best interests at heart,” said Chapter President and Zone II Director Melissa Siegel. “Nicolle is not afraid to speak out, always steps up to help, and everyone knows they can rely on her. Our chapter is much stronger as a result of all her efforts.”
A library assistant at Hallinan Elementary in Lake Oswego, Landau has made her library a place where all students feel welcome, from displays celebrating authors with dyslexia to stocking diverse books so that students can see themselves in what they are reading. Landau even built a ‘Makerspace’ where students can create and innovate, encouraging different ways of learning and making sure every student is empowered and confident in their abilities.
“Nicolle wants everyone to feel included and shows that at every opportunity,” said Barbara Middleton, a special education assistant at Hallinan. “She gives students that need additional support a job in the library or Makerspace. That helps them gain independence and self-confidence, which helps all the teachers and staff.”
Landau’s extraordinary support extends to the entire school community. Community groups hold meetings and events in her library, and teachers turn to her for help finding resources that correlate with their curriculum. “The library is the heart of our school, thanks to Nicolle,” said Landau’s supervisor, Principal Melissa Griffiths. “She has outstanding rapport due to the connections and relationships she builds.”
