Teri Jones elected new vice president

OSEA Vice President Ma’Lena Wirth recently announced her resignation (effective Jan. 2, 2019) after taking a job with her school district that took her out of her bargaining unit.

New Vice President

Teri Jones is sworn in by OSEA President Tim Stoelb as OSEA’s new vice president at the end of the Dec. 14 Board of Directors meeting in Salem.

In anticipation of the vacancy, the OSEA Board of Directors elected Zone IV Director Teri Jones to be vice president during a Board work session on Dec. 14. She was later sworn in at the end of the Friday Board meeting while Wirth received an award honoring her for her years of service.

Wirth said her new role as ESL/family coordinator and interpreter/translator with the Baker School District reflects the growing needs of the Latino population within Baker County. But as an OSEA member for 19 years and state vice president since 2012, the decision to leave the union she loves wasn’t easy.

“It was an emotional moment,” Wirth said. “However, in order to better serve this community of learners … it was a necessary move.

Outgoing Vice President Ma’Lena Wirth shares a hug with Stoelb after receiving an award honoring her for her years of service to OSEA.

“I hope, someday, to be standing (again) side-by-side, fists raised up … with my union family,” she added.

In accordance with the OSEA Constitution, Article IX Elected Officers, and OSEA Board Policy 127, the Board of Directors has the responsibility of filling the Zone IV vacancy with an active Zone IV member in good standing for the previous 12 months. As this vacancy occurred more than 90 days before our next Conference, the Board will fill the unexpired term until the June 2019 OSEA Conference, when a new zone director will be elected by Zone IV delegates.

Zone IV members who are interested in serving as zone director must send a letter of interest to: OSEA President, in care of the OSEA State Office, 4735 Liberty Road S., Salem, OR 97302. All letters of interest must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 4, 2019.

The Board will interview qualified candidates on Jan. 11 prior to the start of our All In Leadership Summit in Portland. Candidates will be contacted regarding interview times. The successful candidate will be seated on the Board immediately upon completion of the interviews and a secret ballot vote of the Board of Directors.
