OSEA endorses Gov. Brown for reelection

OSEA President Tim Stoelb on Friday announced the OSEA Board of Directors has endorsed Gov. Kate Brown for reelection in 2018.

“At a time when public employees face attacks like never before, it’s critical to have strong, effective leaders who have our backs. Gov. Kate Brown has always looked out for us and the students we serve,” Stoelb said. “Brown has been an attentive and devoted voice for working people and Oregon’s children ever since her days in the Oregon Legislature. She has carried these values with her through her rise to the state’s top elected office. In states like Wisconsin, Michigan and Iowa, we’ve seen the damage done by anti-worker, anti-public education governors. Oregonians value great schools and strong protections for working people, and so does Gov. Kate Brown.”

Gov. Brown told OSEA she was thrilled to receive such a vote of confidence from Oregon’s largest union representing classified school employees.

“I’m honored to have the support of the Oregon School Employees Association,” Brown said. “The OSEA members who work in school districts, community colleges, libraries, Head Start agencies, and parks and recreation districts are at the forefront of giving every Oregonian — young or old — a chance at a better life.”

During a challenging legislative session, Brown held the line on education cuts and helped ensure stable school funding. She has been very supportive of our Work Shouldn’t Hurt proposals and signed into law new regulations that will help employees in special education be informed and effective regarding student needs.

“In an era where too many elected leaders operate as though truth is optional, Brown’s pledge to govern based on facts and data is refreshing. Her genuine empathy for working people makes her the right governor at the right time,” Stoelb said. “We look forward to partnering with Brown on issues of vital importance to our members: Working to fully fund education, protecting our members’ jobs from outsourcing to private contractors, ensuring Oregon’s most profitable businesses contribute to our state’s success, and preserving our hard-won rights such as collective bargaining, paid sick leave and other pro-worker policies.”

“The OSEA Board of Directors is proud to announce our early endorsement for Gov. Kate Brown in the 2018 election and we urge our members to do what they can to ensure Brown is reelected,” Stoelb added.
